Project Overview
MAPS replaced and relocated the commercial evaporative cooler serving the Fire Assay area at ALS Laboratories’ Malaga site. We removed the old high-level wall-mounted unit, installed a new Braemar cooler on a custom frame below the existing ductwork, and connected it into the duct system serving the area. Electrical and plumbing disconnections were handled by other trades.
The Solution
Decommissioning and Removal
We decommissioned the existing unit before it came off the wall, coordinating the timing with the trades handling disconnection. The lift couldn’t start until that was done. With the cooler mounted high on the wall, we used an EWP for access and brought in a crane to take the weight once it was freed from its mountings. Ryan, Callem and Dave managed the access and crane coordination, and stayed on through the mounting, ductwork and commissioning support. New Top-Discharge Cooler
We supplied and installed a commercial Braemar RPS4000TC, a top-discharge model suited to the Fire Assay application. With the unit sitting under the duct run, the top discharge feeds up into the system above it. Custom Support Frame
Relocating the cooler meant it needed new support, so we fabricated a custom uni-strut frame to hold the unit beneath the existing sheet metal ductwork. Ductwork and Commissioning
We supplied and ran new sheet metal ductwork to connect the cooler into the existing duct system serving Fire Assay. Once it was in, we supported the commissioning to get the system running. Working Around a Live Laboratory
ALS kept operating while we were on site, so the work had to fit around a working laboratory. Crane setup and access were planned around normal site activity.
Outcome
The Fire Assay area now has a new commercial evaporative cooler running in place of the old wall-mounted unit. It sits on its own frame, set up so it can be serviced.
Client Feedback
ALS was pleased with how the project was handled, particularly the way the crane lift and site access were planned around a working laboratory. With the new cooler now running and set up for servicing, the Fire Assay team has a practical setup going forward.
